Here are three compelling reasons why YOU should get involved!

When life takes a turn for the worse, there usually are no easy answers. United Way understands that to get back on solid footing, people need all kinds of help. Whatever it takes, we’re with you every step of the way. Here are three compelling reasons why one should get involved.

One gift helps so many

Through United Way, you support a network of 5 local agencies helping people throughout the Roanoke Valley. These agencies range from the Boy Scouts to small, lesser-known organizations -- like Helpful Hands and Hearts  -- that promote positive change. These agencies are there when needed.

You help address urgent, unmet needs

A portion of your gift is also targeted to innovative agency programs that respond to new and emerging needs. These include programs and services for youth, families, the disadvantaged, and the elderly population to stay self-sufficient in their own homes.

Your donation stays right here in the Roanoke Valley.

  • Fundraising and Donation Efforts
The UW Helps NC Fund is at the forefront of our fundraising initiatives. Thanks to contributions from key partners like Duke Energy Foundation, our fundraising efforts have been significantly bolstered. Donations are vital to ensuring we meet urgent needs and sustain recovery efforts. As Brittany Pruitt Fletcher, President and CEO, stated, “During times of crisis, our strength lies in unity…These funds will enable us to provide essential resources as quickly as possible.”  Donors can select specific areas to support or allow UWNC to allocate resources where the need is greatest. • "It's not about stopping anyone from coming, just making sure it is done in a coordinated way. There may be more efficient means of deliveries than 100 pickup trucks showing up and draining local fuel. NC VOAD can play that role of trying to connect groups that need volunteers with people who want to volunteer. There is a page on the NCVOAD website where volunteer opportunities can be posted."
    • Individuals absolutely must coordinate with NC VOAD-approved agencies to authorize, collect, and transport donations. They can do so by going to ncvoad.org/volunteer/ to view the list of volunteer organizations that are authorized.
    • Organizations/Warehouses/Groups can email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for offers and inquiries on how to support, and to assist in coordination of donations and volunteer efforts.

  • Volunteer Mobilization
Volunteers are critical to the recovery process. While physical access to the most affected areas remains limited due to dangerous conditions, UWNC is connecting volunteers with remote and local opportunities in all 100 counties. These efforts ensure that everyone can contribute to rebuilding, whether through virtual support or assisting locally in areas less impacted.
    • Attached to this email is a spreadsheet of 265 people willing to volunteer their time and skillsets to helping the cause. They are expecting a call from their local United Way who can offer volunteer opportunities. Please reach out to them if you need volunteers or know of any organizations who need volunteers! More to come. This is just the list from 9/30 - 10/2.
